Shrimp boat leaving port

South Louisiana with T.P. Outdoors Adventures

I’ve been helping film the T.P. Outdoors Adventures TV show for several years now with Bill Petrus and each show really is an adventure. On one of the first shows I filmed, I thought I was filming Bill get eaten by an alligator. True story! Thought I was going die myself a time or two but we’ve all survived so far.

Our most recent adventure was typical. We tried to cram a nutria shoot, bow fishing, Frog Giggin, and Red Fishing into two days. Why? Because sleep is over rated.

Turns out, its harder to find the nutria during the summer when the grasses in the marsh get thick so we focused our attention on frogging instead. Our friend Rafe Antill in Houma put us on the frogs after showing us around the marsh and showing us some on going alligator farming operations. That part was pretty interesting.

We caught a lot of frogs

The rest of the adventure was not nearly as productive as the frogging. from Houma, we set off for the Leeville/Golden Meadow area for some bow fishing and red fishing. We had an overloaded air boat and not so ideal wind and water conditions which made it very tough (i.e. we almost sunk the boat) bow fishing.

It became clear that it just wasn’t safe to proceed with bow fishing so we called it a short night and hoped for better luck the next morning where Brock Miller had some Hobie Kayaks lined up for us from The Back Packer out of Baton Rouge. Brock may be young but he is already an accomplished tournament angler having won multiple tournaments including Ride The bull at the age of 16. Now in college Brock is even more experienced and was a great guide for this crew of novice kayak fishermen.

Unfortunately, the wind and water conditions persisted into the next day making for tough fishing, but I was pretty impressed with the way the Hobie Kayaks handled the water. They provided a very stable platform for such a little boat and the Hobie Mirage ST pedal Fins made them a lot of fun to scoot around the marsh in as we fished. All in All, our group caught three or four keeper fish and we had a great time. Would love to do it it a gain but for the rest of the story, you’ll have to stay tuned for an upcoming episode of T.P. Outdoors Adventures.

While the fishing and what not may not have been as productive as we’d like, I did end up with quite a few great images of south Louisiana. For more of these, view my gallery below.

Bastrop Rodeo April 12th

Last night I was able to shoot the Bastrop Rodeo. Bergeron Rodeo Company and the Morehouse Parish Activity Center made for a great night.

Unfortunately the vast number of severe weather threats have forced the cancelation of tonights rodeo. So, for now you’ll have to enjoy some photos from last nights events.

Slingin Arrows LFAA 3D Archery Tournament

Saturday morning, I tagged along with Jackson Stephens as he competed in his first 3D archery tournament. The LOUISIANA FIELD ARCHERY ASSOCIATION State 3D Tournament. I thought the event turned out pretty well.

Jackson Stephens

Mentoring through The JOAD Program

Mentoring is a huge part of opening the door to the outdoors. Brent Smith with Slingin Arrows in El Dorado, AR is doing just that with the Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD) program. In the JOAD program young archers compete and earn pins, much like merit badges, as they advance their archery skills.

In full disclosure, Brent and I were college roommates for a while so I’ve known Brent for some time. However, I’ve watched him a lot at slinging arrows on Tuesday nights as he works individually with kids to help them become better shooters.

Jackson has been involved in the JOAD program for about three months now and I’ve been very impressed with his ability to shoot at such a young age. He can be a very athletic kid when he finds something he wants to do and he has great hand eye coordination which results in some raw talent that just needs focused refinement.

LOUISIANA FIELD ARCHERY ASSOCIATION

The LOUISIANA FIELD ARCHERY ASSOCIATION is not a part of the JOAD program, so Jackson is not a member of LFAA. Therefor he competed in the guest devision. His flight was a great group of people who although they were competing, everyone was also learning along the way. At least in our small group, everyone worked together shooting and scoring their targets and had a lot of fun while doing it.

One thing that impressed me at the event is how many women were involved in the tournament. Nationally, hunting license sales and in turn conservation dollars are down as Americas hunters are aging. Statistics show that if a child’s father hunts, fishes, or is otherwise involved in outdoor activities, its about a 50/50 shot at whether the child will be involved also. Now, if a child’s mother is also involved in the outdoors, its almost 100% guaranteed that their kids will as well. So, Good Job Ladies!!! Keep it going!!!

At the end of the day, Jackson scored 107 which wasn’t enough to place, but I think it taught him some lessons. He had a great time at the event and I hope it encouraged him.

Back From #ATA2019

A few things caught my attention last week as I attened the annual Archery Trade Association show where companies in the outdoor industry come together to show off their latest and greatest products and to network with other industry partners.

There were a lot of great new products there as well as some tried and true gear that those in the outdoors know and love. Everyone from the smallest of mom and pop sporting goods store or bow shop to the biggest stars from all of the outdoor networks. It’s a great gathering opportunity for professionals in the outdoor industry.

Products

Convergent Hunting Solutions

I’ve worked with several outdoor companies and non profit organizations over the years on a variety of projects. This time, I attended the ATA Show with Convergent Hunting. They are the manufacturers of a line of electronic game calls that are deadly in all types of predator hunting as well as feral hog management.

Most hunters are not familiar with the effectiveness of calling hogs other than the Arkansas Razorbacks. (woo pig sooie) However with the help of Prostaffer Glenn Guess, Convergent has really locked on to a new technique for using their game calls to help thin out the nations hog problems.

The Bullet HP game call has been the go to product for electronic game calls for the last few years. Its Bluetooth receiver connects to your Apple or Android phone which allows you to control the speaker as well as the decoy via a downloadable app. The Predator Pro app is available for free and other apps are available depending on what sounds you want to use.

A new product offering from Convergent is the sidewinder. This weapon mounted game call is small, but packs a punch in the sound department. When mounted to your weapons picatiny rail, the sidewinder connects directly to your phone. A final prototype was on display at the show, but you can Look for the final version later this spring.

SpyHigh Mounting System

One of the cool new products that I particularly liked was the SpyHigh Mounting system. To me, this is one of those why didn’t I think of that things.

The SpyHigh Mounting System is an ingenious trail camera mount that uses a painters pole to install your trail camera in a tree without needing to carry a ladder into the woods with you. It installs in minutes using a unique screw in or a clamp mount and allows you to position your camera high in a tree for the best angle.

To me, the SpyHigh Mounting systems does two things.

  1. By elevating the camera, you get a larger coverage area in each photo. That means more deer can fit in each photo. Even though trail cameras aren’t really artistic in nature, the photographer in me says it means you’ll get a different perspective then the standard tree mounted camera photos that we’ve all gotten use to.
  2. Have you ever lost a camera to theft? Its a terrible feeling knowing your good camera is gone. When you walk through the woods, you are looking down or at eye level. Raise your camera up into a tree and get it out of sight and out of mind of thieves. Plus, with the ability to reach up to 20′ into the air, unless a would be thief has a ladder or the SpyHigh Pole adapter, your camera will be safe from theft even if spotted.

E-bikes

E-bikes seem to be increasing in popularity. There were couple of e-bike manufacturers present at the show. A few months ago, I had a chance to try out the Rambo Bikes at T.P. Outdoors in Monroe, LA. They were also at the show along with QuietKat.

Now E-bikes may not be for everyone but I think they are pretty cool. Personally, I’m not a big fan of riding an ATV right up to your deer stand. I’ve always walked in to my deer stand from a little ways away. Having a quite e-bike might shorten my walk some. Innovation and competition are bringing the price of e-bikes down. E-bikes have also gotten more and more powerful and batteries have gotten lighter. You can even pull a small trailer behind some bikes to haul your deer stand or deer out of the woods. Where I really think these would shine though is in turkey hunting. Nothing like slipping in to your favorite turkey roost with the silence of an electric bike.

Rambo Bike with accessories
Accessories abound for E-bikes

Whether checking trail cameras, scouting, or hunting. I think E-bikes could become a more and more common tool for hunters and outdoorsmen. Especially when it comes to public land hunting.

Obviously, there were lots and lots of other cool products at the ATA show but these are just a few that caught my attention.

In my next blog, we’ll talk about a few of the seminars that I attended while at the ATA show and some thoughts on how we can help improve your companies online presence.
